Growing with Spring

Spring is here, and as days begin to lengthen all of nature abandons itself to the loving gaze of the sun, stretching, unfurling, and welcoming the growth that was just a whispered promise during winter’s quiet.

We’re jumping into Spring with the same happy abandon, ready to grow and discover and delight in the blooming possibilities. And we were thinking, whether what’s growing is trees or flowers or bumblebees or us, that there are a few things we all have in common:

• Growth happens naturally after a period of rest. The cycle of life repeats in countless ways, in tree limbs and grassy leaves and human lives. All phases of the cycle have beauty and purpose, and all have their time.

• Growth happens in unlikely as well as likely places. It is part of the inexhaustible generosity of the universe that, given the smallest space and encouragement, new life will defy the odds and flourish. Cacti bloom in the dessert, flowers grow between cracks in city pavements, and tenderness reawakens in storm-battered souls.

• Growth happens on many levels. Physical growth may be the most obvious, but Spring invites us to consider the multitude of ways we can grow mentally, spiritually, and emotionally as well.
