Benefits of Healthy Touch

Picture
Hugs, hand holding, a reassuring hand on the shoulder, a calming touch on the arm, a high-five, a quick squeeze, ahhh how we miss them in these days of COVID. But, even before the virus, were we getting all the touch therapy we needed?

Not a hugger?

Consider these benefits before you become a hermit. Positive, physical touch releases hormones and endorphins. Oxytocin gives us the warm and fuzzies. Dopamine and serotonin give us the feelings of happy, motivation, reward and compassion. And endorphins help regulate pain and give us the feeling of euphoria. These wonderful chemical reactions can make us happy, give us an immune boost, lower blood pressure, help us sleep, combat depression, reduce stress, and so much more.

“To touch is to give life,” Michelangelo, Italian sculptor.

As a massage therapist, I believe in the power of touch. Not only can massage manipulate the muscles and skin layers, it is therapeutic in other ways as well. Can’t imagine anyone giving you a massage? Have you considered reflexology for those 8000 nerve endings in your feet? Or even Reiki? Or maybe just your hands and feet? Head and neck? There are options.

Believe it or not, there is evidence you can hug yourself or rub your neck for some benefits of touch. And, other evidence shows being on a video chat can give you some benefits as well just by seeing people. Have a pet? Give and get some cuddles from those fur-babies.

Hands down, touch has huge benefits. Find your preference for healing, beneficial touch and be happier and healthier.
