Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Picture

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized therapy that uses extremely light touch and rhythmic pumping movements to stimulate the lymphatic system. By encouraging the movement of lymphatic fluid, MLD helps remove excess fluid, metabolic waste, and toxins from the body's tissues.

Unlike traditional massage therapy, MLD is not intended to work deep into muscles. Instead, it focuses on supporting your body's natural healing processes by improving lymphatic circulation and reducing inflammation.

Please Note: Manual Lymphatic Drainage is not considered a massage. Massage therapy should not be scheduled until at least 72 hours after an MLD session.

What to Expect During Your SessionManual Lymphatic Drainage uses gentle, rhythmic techniques across the body's primary lymphatic pathways.
Treatment areas typically include:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Abdomen
  • Legs to the hip crease
Your comfort and privacy are always a priority. Appropriate draping is maintained throughout your session.

Important Information Before Your AppointmentBecause MLD increases lymphatic circulation, many medications and supplements may feel stronger following treatment.

For example:

  • Alcohol may affect you more quickly and increase hangover symptoms.
  • Pain relievers and certain medications may feel more potent after your session.
Please drink plenty of water after treatment and follow any post-session recommendations provided.

Who Can Benefit from MLD?Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be beneficial for individuals experiencing inflammation, swelling, or impaired lymphatic function due to a variety of conditions, including:

  • Pre- and post-surgical swelling (edema)
  • Cosmetic and aesthetic surgery recovery
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Allergies and sinus congestion
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Whiplash
  • Sprains and sports injuries
  • Tendonitis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Migraines
  • Vertigo
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Bloating and constipation
  • CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
  • Lymphedema (when under the care of a Certified Lymphedema Therapist)
  • Individuals who have had lymph nodes, tonsils, or adenoids removed
Cancer patients may also benefit depending on their diagnosis and stage. Physician approval may be required before treatment.
When MLD May Not Be AppropriateFor your safety, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is generally not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions unless approved by their physician.
These conditions include:

  • Heart disease
